"I See You" by Love & The Outcome: A Song In My Playlist of Life

As I was putting Sophia to bed tonight, this song by Love & The Outcome came on the playlist I created for her specifically for beditme---a playlist I labeled "Sophie's Lullabies." I remember a time when she and I were strolling through the mall and Sophia was absentmindedly singing along to a Katy Perry song that came on the Muzak (the mall's speakers). It was the song that goes, "...let's go all the way tonight..." Ummm, no. Not my 8-year-old. This playlist is my feeble attempt to feed her subconscious with encouraging and uplifting lyrics when she is bombarded all day with song lyrics inappropriate for a child her age. At at the end of my long day, the lyrics of the songs in this playlist provides a form of rest for me, too---rest from the useless noise that take up so much unnecessary space in my head.

This specific song reminded me of when Sophie and I moved in to our first apartment on our own, in an unfamiliar part of town. I was afraid, unemployed, anxiety-filled, and hopeless. This was one of the songs that carried me through a bout of depression and through some very dark valleys. Today, I sing along to it partly-sentimentally, but fully grateful. Whatever terrain you're walking through, I hope you add this on to your playlist.

Lyrics

I've seen the view up on a mountain
Where trouble seems a million miles away
And I know the lonely of the valley
When sorrow is close enough to taste

I've had my share of suffering
I know the pain that life can bring
I've gone through some things
I may never understand (never understand)
But You've been good when life was not
Through battles won and battles lost
And when I look back
On everything I've been through
I see You (I see You)

I know that all things work together
For those of us who choose to call You God
You might use calm, You might use chaos
You'll use whatever leads us to the cross

I've had my share of suffering
I know the pain that life can bring
I've gone through some things
I may never understand (never understand)
But You've been good when life was not
Through battles won and battles lost
And when I look back
On everything I've been through
I see You (I see You)

So now when heartache comes around
Surrounds me like a cloud
I know, I know You're standing next to me right here
I'm gonna hold Your hand right where I am
Yeah, yeah, yeah

I've had my share of suffering
I know the pain that life can bring
I've gone through some things
I may never understand (never understand)
But You've been good when life was not
Through battles won and battles lost
And when I look back
On everything I've been through
I see You
Standing next to me (I see You)
Standing next to me (I see You)
I see You
